What to expect & treatment structure

Your acupuncture treatment will be tailored uniquely and individually to you, to fit your specific needs - no two patients are ever the same. We learn a lot about you during the diagnosis and we build on this at every treatment. We take into account your situation/lifestyle as well as your physical, mental and emotional state to understand your condition fully.

This style of acupuncture uses a gentle needle technique and thinner (sterile, disposable, single-use) needles which patients appreciate. For the majority of your treatments needles are not left in. The needle is inserted gently just below the skin and when it has connected with your Qi energy the needle is taken out.

The initial consultation

The initial consultation and diagnosis takes about 1.5 hours and includes a thorough medical and personal history, a review of the functioning of the systems of the body, and a physical examination. This includes taking the Chinese pulses (felt at the wrist) from which we can determine the balance of energy. Using the diagnostic tools of Five Element Acupuncture, an assessment is made of the condition of your Qi energy. The first treatment often involves a cleansing or detox treatment, which prepares you for further treatments and healing.

We request that for your initial consultation you attend without make up, perfume, deodorant or aftershave. If applicable, a list of medications would be beneficial.

Subsequent appointments

Subsequent appointments are generally scheduled for 50 minutes to 1 hour.

For best results, a weekly appointment for the first 4 weeks is recommended. Treatments are then spaced out to 2, 4 or 6 weeks, depending on your needs.  At each session, a patient’s current circumstances and response to previous treatment is discussed. Each person is unique and, as such, some treatments may require more time, others less.
